Digital Image Correlation for Complex Fracture Characterization:
Strain measurement is critical for the characterization of geologic oil and gas formations. Strain gauges are typically used for the laboratory measurement of strain. This method, however, has several uncertainties due to the challenges in the attachment of such sensitive gauges to surface besides its limitation in providing only a single strain measurement. In this project, we investigate the use of optical methods associated with image processing as a non-contact method to provide full-field strain to study rock deformation.
